This oval medal in yellow gold which has 2 sides; it bears on the back a few words of prayer in Latin and on the front the "M" of Mary topped with a cross and surrounded by 12 stars, evoking the divine power over creation. There are also two hearts, that of Jesus and Mary symbolizing divine love towards men. 

The Chapel of Graces of the Miraculous Virgin (La Chapelle du Grâce de Sainte Vierge Miraculeuse (de Paris)) or informally the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, is a Marian shrine located in Paris, France, and the inspiration for this Miraculous Medal (Médaille miraculeuse), also known as Our Lady of Graces. It owes its origin to the Marian apparitions that took place in the Chapel of the rue du Bac and in particular in 1830 in front of Catherine Labouré. The Virgin appears standing on the world crushing with her foot the evil represented by a snake.
